The start of 2017 seems to have flown as I have been completely heads down working on my new show Liza Sings Streisand.
In truth, I have been pretty heads down working on my new show Liza Sings Streisand. There’s always so much to do when you’re creating a new show but for me, it all begins and ends with the songs. First you have to pick them and let me tell you, that after a 54 year recording career and over 70 albums, finding just 2 hours of Streisand material has been no easy feat. Then, having picked them, you have to shape them into your own arrangements and that’s the really fun stuff. My brilliant MD Joseph Atkins and I work for months, sometimes spending 45 minutes on just one bar of music until it feels totally right. Poor, long-suffering Joe. I send him voice memos with how I think an arrangement might go, often with the sound of my bird clock in the background, or the wind in the phone as I walk, and he then has to translate that into something we can work with. If we ever fall out, he’s threatened to put them all on Facebook and let them go viral!
But now it’s Spring and, the arrangements are done, my outfits have been purchased and we meet with the Stardust Ensemble for three glorious days of rehearsals shortly after Easter, before heading out on our tour: first stop-the fabulous Belgrade Theatre, Coventry.
Barbra Streisand will be 75 years old this year. She is a totally unique artist. A woman who has managed to shape her own career, retain artistic control, be as funny as a clown and yet still be taken totally seriously as the extraordinary singer that she is. She is and always has been an enormous influence on me and it is a treat to be able to be singing these great songs with my amazing band in some of England finest venues.
For details of all the dates (which may or may not be coming to a theatre near you) please check my website. So hoping to share a bit of Babs with you over the next couple of months.
